Transitioning to Process Art at Haven

We are excited to share that Haven will be shifting our focus toward increasing process art in the coming months. This decision is rooted in our commitment to fostering creativity and self-expression in our children.

Process art

Process art emphasizes the experience of creating rather than the final product. It encourages children to explore materials freely, experiment with techniques, and express their thoughts and feelings without the pressure of specific outcomes. By embracing this approach, we aim to cultivate their imagination, boost their confidence, and support their emotional development.

As we transition to process art, you may notice that the appearance of your children’s artwork will change. Rather than polished, predetermined results, you’ll see more varied and spontaneous creations that reflect their individual experiences and emotions. These artworks may include vibrant colors, unusual textures, and abstract forms. This shift is intentional and celebrates the uniqueness of each child’s creative journey.

You might also observe that less artwork will come home as we prioritize the process over the product. Many creations will be displayed in our classroom or used for ongoing projects, allowing children to revisit and expand upon their ideas. This focus on exploration means that the act of creating takes precedence over producing a finished piece. Many pieces of art are saved for Arts Fest which will occur on May 23rd 2025! Following Arts Fest they will be sent home. If you are not satisfied with the amount of artwork being sent home, or want additional photos of their masterpieces on brightwheel, please let your child’s teachers know.

To engage with your child about their creations, we encourage you to ask open-ended questions that invite them to share their thoughts. Instead of focusing on what the artwork is supposed to represent, you might ask, “Can you tell me about your colors?” or “What was your favorite part of making this?” This approach helps them articulate their creative process and builds their confidence in expressing themselves.

We believe that this focus on process art will not only enhance their artistic skills but also promote a lasting love for creativity. We’re excited to embark on this journey with your children and appreciate your support as we embrace process art in our curriculum!
